Sports Profile
Brains & Braun
"On your mark! Get set! Go!" Splash. Fifty-five point three seconds later, STEVE WASZAK emerges from the pool. He has just set another school record in the butterfly, but only has time to catch his breath before the next race. Steve has already set two school records in the butterfly and the 200-yard medley, and was a member of the record-setting medley and freestyle teams.
Although his letter sweater sports both All-City and All-State stripes, he hasn't always been a top swimmer. In fact, in sophomore year there was even a question as to whether he would stay on the team. But his drive and desire to succeed were so great that last year he received the Most Improved Swimmer award. His leadership was so recognized that he was elected co-captain of the team, and because of this post serves on the Varsity Club Advisory Board.
Steve keeps in shape throughout the summer as a lifeguard at the Detroit Golf Club. He is also the captain of an A.A.U. swim team to which he belongs during his off-season.
Steve does not support the popular theory that brains and brawn do not mix. He has been a consistent honors winner for four years and he is a National Merit Finalist. He also finds time to support his school at all other athletic events. During lunch time he is even found playing intramurals, hacking away with the best of them.
